Day 1: Arequipa to Colca Canyon Valley

  • 08:45am – 09:15am: Pick-up from hotels in the center of Arequipa.

  • 09:15am: Departure towards the “Ruta del Sillar,” a cultural and historic tour visiting quarries and areas where the sillar originated.

    • First stop: Añashuayco Quarry (approximately 45 minutes away).
      • View a large canyon with ignimbrite cliffs, formed by sillar extraction.
      • Learn about the history and use of sillar.
      • See a megatallado (large carving) of the Church of the Company of Jesus, created by local stonemasons.
      • Opportunity to interact with stonemasons and try cutting a stone block.
  • Next stop: Culebrillas Gorge (30 minutes from Añashuayco).

    • 20-minute walk through a small canyon with 15-20 meter walls, formed by water erosion.
    • See Wari-era petroglyphs (over 1,000 years old).
    • Observe Apachetas (stone formations symbolizing gratitude and good luck).
  • 12:00pm: Begin the return journey to Arequipa.

  • 01:00pm: Arrive back in Arequipa, dropped off near the main square.
